Trent has been supporting kids in schools for nearly 30 years with their social-emotional growth and school readiness. He has provided training to parents and educators in trauma-informed practice, play-skill development, positive, proactive behavior interventions, self-regulation, and more. Recently, he’s been sharing his insights on executive functioning and play skill development.
Trent began using RPG’s as a conduit to SEL instruction some years ago, discovering that a good story and the promise of agency can sweeten the formidable task of learning social and self-regulation skills. With younger kids (6+) Trent uses either Little Wizards or free-styles on a walk-and-talk. Free-styling, by the way, works beautifully with a whole class or gymnasium filled with kids - surprisingly easy to manage and hilariously team-building. Older kids and adults play Dungeons & Dragons 5E, a time-honored classic. Trent has collaborated on story themes with mental-health clinicians, social workers, and Indigenous leaders to help support kids achieve their goals and welcomes such collaboration from his clients.
Role-playing games have been a part of Trent’s life since his early teens. His is a familiar story about how D&D saved his mental health and provided connection to an awkward kid. Eventually, RPG’s morphed into a venue for mindful skill development and a more profound connection with good friends.
